Mind The Gap at Cosmic Cafe 11.09.10

WE ARE BACK!!

After a long (too long!) hiatus from local live events we are delighted to host a night at the excellent Cosmic Cafe in RCA. Check out the Facebook event here

Cosmic Cafe has built a solid reputation in RCA as a great place to hang with your friends with an alternative soundtrack while you hit the drinks and eat some food...A concept we at Mind The Gap support enthusiastically.

Three piece, guitar based, power pop/rock, Bangkok band known for their visceral performances and catchy songs. An explosive show is guaranteed...They will rock it at Cosmic.

One of the house bands at Cosmic Cafe. The will be playing a set of their own songs rather than the normal indie covers set. If you think Thai music is dated be prepared to change your opinion. Think /rock/dance/electro.

Rootsy rock with a retro vibe....very much a "songs for life" band but brought into the 21st century. They recently released a new single and have and album due to be released soon.
Deep lyrics and kick ass show.

Lots of bands in Thailand claim to be alternative, shoegaze...art even... Class A Cigarettes will totally challenge your aesthetic sensibilities.
In our opinion these guys are the real deal. There is nobody else like them.

Buzzcocks Live in Bangkok 28.11.09

Image hosting by IMGBoot.com
In 1976 Buzzcocks changed music forever.

There are very few bands that perform in Bangkok that can be described as “Legends” but Buzzcocks certainly deserve that title.

Not only were they at the forefront of the UK punk revolution along with contemporaries Sex Pistols and The Clash, they released the classic four-track EP, Spiral Scratch on their own New Hormones label, making them one of the first punk groups to establish an independent record. This EP is now seen as the beginning of the independent music scene which thrives today especially in Buzzcocks hometown of Manchester.

After organizing the now legendary Sex Pistols show at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall in 1976 as featured in the films “Control” and “24 Hour party People”, Buzzcocks went on to record the classic albums “Another Music in a Different Kitchen” and “Love Bites” after singer Howard Devoto left to form the band Magazine.

30 years later Buzzcocks are still going strong, still doing it arguably better than anyone else. The Godfathers of punk-pop will be performing live in Bangkok on Saturday November 28th at Club Culture. The band still comprises of original members Pete Shelley (vocals) and Steve Diggle (guitar) with new additions Chris Remington (bass) and Danny Farrant (drums)

Buzzcocks are famous for their pop-punk sound which has influenced bands such as Nirvana, Green Day, The Libertines, The Strokes and The Offspring.

Whilst Buzzcocks have a huge catalogue of songs, the one they are most well known for is “Ever Fallen in Love (With Some you Shouldn’t Have)”. It has been covered by many other artists, most famously by Fine Young Cannibals and more recently Pete Yorn for the film Shrek 2.

Other Buzzcocks classics include “Boredom”, “Orgasm Addict”, “What Do I Get?” and “Harmony in my Head” among many others.

Renowned for their legendary live shows, their set is a fast and frenetic run through of their hit songs and is a non-stop barrage of pure pop-punk energy.

Special guests for the night will be local acts Abuse The Youth and Blood Thirst Spider.

Handsome Furs

Live in Bangkok

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Handsome Furs is comprised of husband/wife duo Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade and his wife Alexei Perry. They signed on to the legendary indie label Sub Pop Records in late 2006 and released their first full-length album Plague Park in 2007. Their follow up album Face Control has received rave reviews including an 8/10 from influential Pitchfork Media.

Handsome Fur’s music is a blend of Electro beats and synths combined with enormous punk and post-punk guitar sounds. There isn't a couple in indie rock that exudes more sexual energy than Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry with their smoking, skin-baring performances firing up venues around the world.

“Thumping, synth powered anthems” - Rolling Stone

“Gritty guitar and club beats with the energy of a sugar high six year-old” - Spin

“Handsome Furs make beautiful music both on and off the stage” - Nylon

“Clearly a match made in weirdo heaven – 8/10” - Pitchfork

Live at The Tube 24.06.09

Photobucket
This week we have another great line up for you.

Puzzle are an excellent band with brilliant songs. They are great players and the songs are full of catchy melodies. They've played for us before but we haven't seen them for at least 3 months so it's great to have them back.

Hooos are also back again as well, this band keep getting better and better. The songs and performances are very engaging and quite unlike other bands.

We are pleased to welcome for their first show Mad Stone Bunny. They've got and early 90's vibe about them and were very keen to see what they can do.

This week we've got The Standards for you. They just came back from a very succesful show in Malaysia for KOKOASIA. By all accounts they killed it over there. The band have got great songs and their shows are electrifying, makes sure you see them.

Zero Hero come back for another show, they are starting to pick up a lot of fans at the moment and are rumored to have a new CD coming in the next few months.

We also have Caramel Camel playing, we're told that this is going to be their last ever show :(
If you haven't seen them before make sure you do now, they have a sound that is unique to them...... We wish them all the best for the future.

June 3rd Update!!! Xavier Cancel !!

Photobucket

XAVIER have had to cancel due to their bass player being involved in a car accident. Mind The Gap wish him a speedy recovery.
Revenge Of The Cybermen are stepping in to replace Xavier, we are sure they will not dissapoint. Don't forget Art Floor and Class A Cigarettes and we still have a kicking line up.
The bands start at about 10pm,  see you later!

Live at The Tube June 3rd

We've just come back from a very succesful campus tour with Abuse The Youth.
The band played in Ubon Ratcathanee, Sisikaet, Surin and Udon Thani. Also on the tour were Art Floor and we thought it would be great if they would play at Mind The Gap. Art Floor have recently had a hit single and their sound is quite melodic but boosted with soaring guitar solos with more than a nod to Radiohead.

We pleased to welcome back Xavier who really impressed us with their show a few months back at The Tube. Great songs with a very stylish delivery.

Also it's great to have Class A Cigarettes back at the Tube again...Think Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground.

The Tube has recently expanded the seating and indoor area which is working well. Not forgetting the amazing food and cheap drinks, where else would you go on a Wednesday night......

Live At The Tube May 20th

Zero Hero are back at Mind The Gap. These guys always give us a great show, their songs and sound set them apart from all the regular bands out there. Their shows always hit hard and I'm sure we will see a lot of people out to see them.

We also have Stubborn playing their first show for Mind The Gap. The band are based in Bangkok and used to be songwriters for Butterfly Records, they decided that they wanted to start their own band with a more upfront rockier sound and the result is Stubborn.

Sunday Morning Call played one of their first shows with us when we were at Noriegas in Silom. They have quite a lot of brit pop influences, lets see how they've progressed since last time.

Live at The Tube May 13th

This week we bring back the excellent Papers who joined us on our recent
trip to Singapore. The band are often compared to Radiohead but I don't think that really
does them justice. The last time they played for us they put in an amazing performance, I imagine we can expect the same again.

Next up are Hooos, they also played recently for us and everyone enjoyed the show. W e don't normally bring bands back so quickly but we reckon this is a band to watch. They tell us they've been writing new songs so can't wait to hear them!

Finally we have The Why Oh Oh. This band have been around for a few years and are very much in the vein of The Strokes. You can expect sharp snappy sounds and skinny jeans....

Live At The Tube May 6th

Tabasco are back to play Mind The Gap again after a succesful series of shows in Singapore.
They are currently in the studio recording new material for the forthcoming debut album.

Next up is Le Fur. We've been trying to get these guys to play for the last six months but they've always been making excuses that they are busy with stuff. Finally we have them! Theyt recentky played at Club Culture supporting Gene Kasadit's ne w band amongst others.

We also welcome back those irrepresable japanese art rockers Cosmoz.

We're getting quite busy every Wednesday night now and seating at the Tube Bar is almost all gone by 9pm....so get down early!!!

Thanks to everybody who came to the last show.

BRILLIANT performances by Plot, Catfight and Abuse The Youth.

This week we have another stellar line up with an international flavour as well.

Sibling Rivalry are from South Africa but have been resident in Bangkok for the last few months, they make the Mind The Gap debut this week.

You may have seen them playing the bars around Ekkamai and Thong Lo. If you haven't, they play a powerful combination of Rock and Ska excellent adrenalin charged performances.

The Standards make a welcome return, giving you a wholesome chunk of Brit-Thai goodness! If you haven't seen this band....what's your excuse!

We also have Xavier who play The Tube for the first time....think Post Punk, New Wave...excellent!

Live The Tube April 22nd

Mind The Gap is back this Wedneday April 22nd.
We took last week off due to Songkran and Red Shirts getting in the way of things....
We have Abuse The Youth back again before the jet off to Singapore for a series of shows at The Esplanades Rockin The Region concerts.
Plot also make a welcome return with their edgy post wave sounds, really great band.
You must also be sure to check out Cat Fight, brilliant punk/rap hybrid quite beastie boysish! Love it!
Of course great drinks and food to be had at The Tube Bar so make sure you get down early so you can grab a seat

The Tube 1st Year Anniversary Thursday April 9th

The very wonderful Tube Bar celebrates it's birthday...1 year old!!! In the world of Bangkok bars that's no mean feat.
Joining them for their birthday bash are Revenge of The Cybermen, Abuse The Youth, Mandela and Tabasco. It will of course be an amzing night and the Mind The Gap posse will be there in full effect as well.
Expect great DJ's as well as the excellent bands, brilliant drinks and delicious food...

Live At The Tube April 8th

Photobucket
Last weeks show lacked the vibe for some reason, but I think this week we will be back on track.
Class A Cigarettes are back again, they have a new drummer, so will be interesting if they can keep up the intensity they've been displaying recently.

Bone Clone is DJ Spikensteins band , they've been getting their sound together for the last couple of months and are soon to go in to the studio to cut some demos. I heard them a few months back and they were sounding good...let's see if they will be sounding better?

Finally we have Hooos, I saw them play at the Livehouse last week and was impressed, the performance was a bit shaky(their first show I think) but there is something very cool about the band......make sure you check them out.

In addition to the bands we have our friends from Pai's uber cool Rock 'n' Roll Disco djing, so there is no excuse not to be here!
